I fast from distraction. I feast on being fully present. How many mobile devices do you own? One? Two? Three? How many mobile devices do your children own? Have you ever been talking to your husband, son, brother, best friend, and suddenly realized that person’s face is buried in some device? This is […]
I fast from doubt. I feast on confidence! Where does doubt come from? It derives primarily from our comparing ourselves to others and deciding we are inadequate. Not tall enough. Not pretty enough. Not rich enough. Not strong enough. Not smart enough. Not from the right neighborhood, the right race, the right state, the […]
Affirmation for today: “I fast from fear. I feast on courage.” I agree that this is a hard one, so let’s take it slowly. It seems that I am asking you to just let go of your fear, your uneasiness, your worry. And you are thinking, “If I could let go of my fears, […]
What if you “liked” everything about your life? Sorry, I realize that’s too much to ask. Let me rephrase it. What if you “accepted” everything about your life? Let’s go back a little further in this thought process. You do understand that thoughts are things and they take up space in your mind, right? And […]
Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, writes in KEEP A TRUE LENT, Lesson #1: “I deny out of consciousness old error thoughts as if I were gently sweeping away cobwebs, and I affirm positively and fearlessly that I am a child of God and that my inheritance is from Him.” This decision is the beginning of […]
Every year in late February or early March, the Lenten season begins. It is, or can be, a marvelous experience in self-improvement. In a way, Lent is coincidental with spring, the season of new growth in nature. The trees and flowers are not content with the blooms of last year. And if we are in […]
Many Christian traditions recognize the four weeks prior to Christmas as “advent”, which refers to the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event. We all anticipate the arrival of the baby Jesus who is bringing great gifts for us: faith, peace, love, joy. I prefer to think of this season as the “becoming” time…..it is the time when I celebrate the birth of these great qualities in myself.
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” –Hebrews 11:1….. What do you believe in? What beliefs exist for you no matter what happens? Perhaps you believe that parental love is absolutely permanent and infallible. No matter what happens, you can count on Mom and Dad. And that is true for many of us.
Like Christmas shining at the end of the long year, so the light of faith shines at the end of the long journey toward it. It does not matter how you have come, nor how slow your journey toward light and understanding has seemed. The light of Christ is shining steadily in you, through you, and for you. It shines like the Christmas of YOUR life; it proclaims the presence of God; it sings songs of rejoicing because the birth of the Christ spirit is in YOUR midst.
BEGIN your day with a 20-minute period of peace..Call it whatever you like, prayer, meditation, the silence, peaceful moments. Get up a little earlier than usual. You can read inspirational stuff or focus on a positive statement like “I walk in the light of God and all is well.” Try listening to some quiet music. Stay in a private area where you will not be disturbed. Focus on your breathing, just like you were doing some exercise like squats, pushups, situps, lunges. Breathing is exercise. You will be amazed at how good it feels to breathe deeply for 20 minutes.
